On november11,2002, Shangqiu procuratorate initiated a public prosecution. On December 5 of the same year, Shangqiu intermediate people's court, after trial, sentenced ZhaoZuoHai to death for intentional homicide, suspended his execution for two years, and deprived him of political rights for life.

On april30,2010, zhaozhenshang suddenly returned to Zhaolou village. According to him, after the fight, he thought he had hacked ZhaoZuoHai to death with a knife, so he wandered away for 13 years. He returned to the village last year because he suffered from hemiplegia without money for treatment.

On may9,2010, ZhaoZuoHai was acquitted.

Yesterday, the relevant principals of the local public security bureau, the procuratorate and the French authorities in Shangqiu introduced the whole process of investigating, prosecuting and trying the ZhaoZuoHai case that year. ZhaoZuoHai was released from Henan No. 1 prison in Kaifeng at 10:00 on May 9.
